this is a great camera to have and whenever you and your friends want to make a video its usually at your house also you can record for a long time without recharging (110min) but if that isn’t enough for you then you can buy a bigger battery (the catalog comes with)MEXXTRONICS Camera / Video Camera Battery for use in Sony DCR-HC51E, 6,8V, 1800mAh, Lithium Ion, Li-Ion, LiIon, 100% fits, fully compatible (NOT AN ORIGINAL BATTERY), 1800 mAh, 6,8 Vor you can go there

I wanted to replace my aging Sony TRV22E Mini DV and I was toying with the idea of going full digital with a hard drive based Camcorder, but instead I went for the cheaper Mini DV option again.

Let me say straight-off that this was a mistake. The DCRHC51E gave worse results that even my older camcorder, inconsistent lighting, poor focus control and the sound seemed muffled.

I’ve followed the instructions and everything had been transferred to the computer via Fireware, I even used 2 different programs to pull the video off but it still looked worse than the older camcorder.

Long story short, I’ve now taken this Mini DV camcorder back and I’m currently using the old one again until I can save for a proper digital HD Camcorder.

I have had this camcorder for just over a year and it has had 2 faults in this period.

    1. The firewire link(labelled DV)failed after about 2 months. Don’t be fobbed off by Sony if this happens to you. IT IS A FAULT AND THEY MUST REPAIR IT UNDER WARRANTY! They did repair mine, but had the cheek to send a letter stating that if it happened again they would not cover the repair! Thankfully it didn’t re-occur so I couldn’t challenge this statement.

    2. Just as the warranty was about to expire, whilst on holiday in Rome (Ugh!), the the lens cover sensor failed and the camera thought the cover was closed when it was open. Why do these things happen at the start of a holiday and not at the end? This was fixed under warranty. I have to say that Sony’s repair service is very quick but should a unit fail twice in a year??

When the camera is working it is fantastic and does everything I want it to. The transfer to PC is very easy and links very well with Vista’s software. I must admit though, I have lost a lot of faith in the camera and will probably replace it in the next 6 months – overall disappointing Sony.

I have bought this for our new arrival.. It is very simple to use that you dont need to open manual. I still not trust Digital Hard Drive cameras…

I really recommend this to any beginner… Value for money… Light weight… I cant hear any motor noise as few people commented…

Good product for what it does, but I bought this as a gap filler while waiting for the right HDV camcorder to present itself to me, it does the job but doesn’t cope well with strong sunlight on white images against a dark background. Best buy a HDV camcorder, any HDV camcorder instead of this.
